Struck from the dies for a trite
Lot 103
IONIA. Ephesos. Circa 650-600 BC. Hekte or 1/6 Stater (Electrum, 9 mm, 2.32 g), Lydo-Milesian standard. Bee viewed from above. Rev. Incuse punch composed of two incuse squares with irregular indentations, separated by low convex vertical line. BMC -. BMFA -. CNG 102 (2016), 444 (same dies). Karwiese II.1, Type 2, 3 (same dies). Linzalone 1101 (same dies). Pozzi -. Rosen -. SNG Kayhan -. SNG von Aulock -. Weidauer -. Extremely rare. Struck from somewhat worn dies, otherwise, very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

This lovely piece demonstrates that the dies employed for tritai were also utilized in the production of hektai. Despite the smaller flan, the motif remained discernible here, but since the dies soon wore down completely, this aspect became irrelevant for later pieces (see lot 104 below).
